The afternoon sun hung low over the elementary school playground, casting a warm glow across the field behind the building. While most of the students had already gone home, the twins, Margot and Madeleine sat in the grass with their teacher, completely absorbed in the story she was reading.
Lauren Mitchell, their teacher, sat cross-legged on the lawn with the book open in her lap, letting the girls take turns guessing what would happen next. Margot was curled up beside her, pointing excitedly at the pictures, while Madeleine laughed every time the main character made a mistake.
“Really? In the grass? They’re wearing white you know, Unless you plan on paying for their dry cleaning, i suggest this position doesn’t happen again.”
Lauren stopped laughing and looked up at a shadow that was blocking the sun’s view.
A tall woman with dark hair in sunglasses stared down at us with her arms crossed and disapproving face.
She looked like she had walked out of a fashion magazine and her whole outfit cost more than everything I owned.
“Mommy!” The twins yelled getting up from my lap and running to hug their mom’s legs.
“oh-uhm.” Lauren stuttered trying to stand up without tripping over my own two feet.
“I apologize Mrs.Ashford. It won’t happen again.” Lauren tucked her hair behind her ear as she looked down dusting off her dress and back up at the intimidating women.
“It’s Miss Ashford… and good.” She replied coldly with the same hard look. “Also I prefer than you wait inside with them. This humidity causes their hair too frizz easily. do you know how hard it is to get a six year old to sit in a salon chair?” She questioned.
Lauren opened her mouth but was interrupted.
“No. you don’t. don’t let this happen again.” She stated before walking off with the twins.
Lauren’s watched as the twins waved goodbye to her as they walked away.
