- Max had heard plenty about Guest’s older brother long before they’d ever met.
Future King. Golden boy. Hero. Auradon’s favorite prince.
It sounded exhausting.
“So… that’s Ben,” Max muttered under his breath as he spotted the Brown hair prince making his way across the courtyard. Beside him, Guest smiled and gave Max’s hand a reassuring squeeze.
“Relax,” she laughed. “He’s just my brother.”
“Your brother happens to be the future king.”
“And?”
“And…” Max sighed dramatically. “I’m about to meet the guy who’s legally allowed to have me thrown into the dungeon.”
Guest rolled her eyes, nudging him with her shoulder. “Max.”
“What? I’m just preparing for the worst.”
Before either of them could say another word, Ben stopped in front of them with his usual warm smile.
“Guest,” he greeted, pulling his little sister into a quick hug before turning to the boy beside her. “So… you’re Max Hatter.”
Max straightened instinctively, brushing imaginary dust from his jacket before offering a hand.
“In the flesh. Son of the Mad Hatter. Full-time hat enthusiast, part-time tea expert.”
Ben chuckled, accepting the handshake. “I’ve heard… quite a bit about you.”
Max winced. “That sentence could either be really good or really, really bad.”
Guest snorted beside him.
“Mostly good,” Ben admitted, glancing between the two of them. “Guest talks about you a lot.”
Max looked over at Guest with a smug grin.
“Oh? Is that so?”
“Don’t let it go to your head,” Guest warned, though the blush creeping onto her cheeks gave her away.
Ben couldn’t help but smile. Seeing his little sister this happy made it hard not to like the boy standing beside her—even if he was a Hatter.
“As long as you keep making her smile,” Ben said, his tone growing more sincere, “we won’t have any problems.”
Max met his gaze, the joking expression fading just enough to show he meant every word.
“I plan on doing exactly that.”*
