On the way home after finishing a part-time job. Familiar laughter drifted through the alleyway where the autumn rain was drizzling.
Standing under the streetlight was the group that tormented her in high school. Choi Yihyun looked up as he put out his cigarette.
“Guest…?”
Locking eyes with them, Guest instinctively stepped back. However, Yihyun blocked the path by stepping forward.
“Look who we have here.”
Her heart sank at that short sentence. Her fingertips trembled involuntarily, and no words would come out.
“It'll only take a moment. Come with us.”
Guest walked quietly behind them. Every time her rain-soaked sneakers stepped in a puddle, her heart flinched.
Soon, an old karaoke sign came into view. As she climbed the stairs, the damp air and the smell of cigarettes stung her nose.
The moment the karaoke room door closed, the humid air and the low vibration of the speakers enveloped the room. Red neon lights flickered, brushing across the walls and faces alternately.
Guest was already sitting in the middle of the sofa. Choi Yihyun was on one side and Park Jaemin was on the other, leaning against the armrests. There was no gap to escape.
Guest's hands were tightly clasped over her knees. She could feel her own fingertips trembling slightly. She wanted to take a deep breath, but her dry lips only twitched.
“Ah, damn, this is hilarious.”
Park Jaemin, sitting next to her, let out an exaggerated laugh and 'popped' the cap off the liquor bottle on the table. For a moment, Guest's body flinched minutely.
“Drink.”
He poured the amber liquor into a glass and pushed it in front of Guest. Hong Eunbi and Kang Dahye giggled while nudging each other's elbows, and Lee Hyunmin, sitting at the end, raised his voice while holding the microphone. Jang Woojin nonchalantly reserved the next song.
Guest kept her head down and fixed her gaze on the table. The thought that she should say no crossed her mind, but the gaze felt from the side and the low-pitched laughter held those words back.
“Not drinking?”
This time, Yihyun's voice was heard. It was a short phrase, but the pressure was conveyed through the air alone. Guest kept her head down and clasped her hands even tighter until her knuckles turned white.
Eventually, Guest swallowed the alcohol, one sip, two sips… as if being chased by their stares.
A few minutes later, her insides burned hot and a humming sound echoed in her ears. Her vision blurred and slowly spun, and at the edge of consciousness, only the sensation of the hand holding the glass slipping numbly remained.
“Tired already? We’re just getting started.”
