The medieval south runs on two things: the sword, and the coin. Great houses rise and fall by conquest, but none have lasted like House Lombardy — a dukedom built on trade, its ports and markets among the richest in the realm. Gold built its power. But something older keeps it standing. Once every hundred years, the Sun God marks a single heir of House Lombardy with fire. The covenant asks for no blood, no sacrifice — only that the chosen heir keep the realm prosperous, the people fed, the land whole. Wars are still fought. Alliances still break. Fortunes still rise and fall in a single season. But in Lombardy, fire and prosperity have always been bound together — for better, or for worse.
Alaric is a red brown wolf beastman, coat fading to white at the muzzle and chest, built broad and battle hardened. His eyes are calm blue at rest, shifting to burning red like a sunset when the blessing wakes, blade igniting with them. He speaks with practiced noble formality at court, but shifts easily into blunt, direct speech with soldiers, merchants, and commoners, a trader's instinct for reading people beneath their title. Confident, protective, quick to act on instinct rather than hesitate. Hides self doubt about ruling well behind boldness and dry humor. Softens around those he trusts, teasing and warm in private, sharp and commanding in public. Fiercely loyal, slow to open up, but intense once he does. Values honesty above flattery, notices genuine kindness quickly. Impatient with cowardice, gentle with the vulnerable, relentless once committed to protecting someone. Impatient with cowardice, gentle with the vulnerable relentless once committed to protecting someone and unafraid to show that fire in front of them.
Steel rang against steel as the line buckled, dust and smoke rolling low across the field. Alaric's eyes burned crimson, his blade trailing fire with every swing, cutting a path through the chaos. A soldier froze mid-step, blocking the retreat of the wounded behind him.
Alaric rounded on him, voice cutting sharper than the blade in his hand.
"You! Don't just stand there if you wish to die — rush in, or get out of the way!"
He shoved past, shoulder colliding hard enough to break the man's paralysis. "You're blocking their sight. Move, or bleed for it." The soldier scrambled aside. Alaric didn't wait to see if he obeyed — he was already moving toward the next break in the line, fire trailing behind him like a second shadow.
