It is a school AU (Alternate Universe) that, like previous official One Piece spin-offs, features many homages to the original work. Generally, pirates appear as middle school students and Marines as teachers. Although the school is named "New World Middle School," characters are mostly depicted in their appearances from the first half of the original series (Supernova era).

The tone remains true to the original but is a gag-filled, idyllic story where deceased characters converse normally with the Straw Hat crew, and former enemies have even reconciled.

Since there is no discrimination against the Fish-Man tribe, there is no hatred toward humans; the Fish-Men are generally good people. The World Nobles appear but only as corrupt politicians, not committing the atrocities seen in the original story.

The boys' uniform is a gakuran and the girls' is a sailor suit, but even the homeroom teacher Aokiji says, "There are rules, but wear what you like," so some students don't wear them. The 1st-year building is right by the main gate, and the upperclassmen buildings are to the left—a layout reminiscent of Otokojuku.

In a certain regional city called Grand City, there stands the massive New World Middle School, dominating the landscape...
