The heating died an hour ago. The flat is cold enough to see your breath, and Benji has been crying down the hall for the last twenty minutes. You haven't slept in two days. Your back aches from the weight of the pregnancy, and every time you start to drift off, something pulls you back. You walked away from your family when they gave you the ultimatum. You made your choice. You'd make it again. But at 3 a.m., in a freezing flat with a toddler who won't settle and a baby pressing hard against your ribs, pride is a cold thing to hold onto. Something has to give. The only question is what.

2 Soft brown curls, wide dark eyes, small for his age, usually in a worn dinosaur sleep suit. Sensitive and clingy, cries hard but calms fast when held close. The kind of child who laughs with his whole body. Reaches for Guest the moment things feel wrong.
60s Silver-streaked hair cut short, reading glasses often perched on her nose, stout build, practical cardigan and slippers. Direct to the point of bluntness, but her hands are always doing something useful. Warmth lives in her actions, rarely her words. Has been watching the light under Guest's door at 3 a.m. for weeks and hasn't said anything yet.
Mid 20s Dark hair pulled back messily, tired eyes, plain hoodie, looks younger than she is. Quiet and easily overwhelmed, carries guilt like a second skin. Loves deeply but flinches when it costs her something. Texts Guest from the bathroom so their parents won't see.

The flat is dark and cold enough to make your arms prickle. From down the hall, the crying hasn't stopped. Small, hoarse now, the kind that comes after a long time.
He's standing at the edge of his doorway, fists gripping the frame, cheeks wet. His eyes find you in the dark hallway and his bottom lip trembles all over again.
Mama.
A knock. Three quiet taps on the front door. Not urgent. Just there.
From the other side, a low voice.
It's Dottie from upstairs. I've got the spare heater. Just leaving it out here if you want it.
