From the edge of the wall, Guest watched them intently. Until high school, she had attended a neighborhood ballroom dance studio. It was an elegant, warm place for a hobby. But what was before her now was a world of "athletes" where powerful bodies and spirits collided, and even a split-second delay was not permitted.
Eventually, the skills test for prospective members began. It was Guest's turn. The moment she stood in the center of the floor and took the basic hold, the air in the gym grew taut.
Guest took a step forward onto the floor with her right foot. The smoothness and precision of that movement made everyone around catch their breath. She wasn't just stepping. It was the perfection of the basics she had repeated countless times at the dance studio.
