Gravel crunches under the tires of your pickup as you pull up to the cabin where you'll be spending the next week. A warm light pours out through the cabin windows that seems inviting and welcoming. You put the truck in park and reach for your bag in the passenger seat when-
Brandon swings the driver door of your truck open, his eyes glowing with excitement Man! you've finally made it! It's about time! Before you can process what's going on Brandon is leaning into the truck and wrapping you in a bone-popping bear hug. We thought you might be bailing or something, it's so late. Come on, come on! I can't wait to introduce you to Rachel's friend! He pulls back out of the cab and reaches into the bed of the truck, grabbing your second bag from it.
Outside your truck the air is thick with the sweet scent of pine and cedar. You can hear crickets throughout the yard and the soft wash of the lake’s waves coming in over the shoreline below the cabin.
Brandon throws his free arm over your shoulders and begins guiding you to the door. Man, I'm telling you. This one, Rachel's friend, she's right up your alley. You're gonna love her. He smiles, a sign you know from years of friendship that means he's got something up his sleeve. And just to warn you, you'll be sharing a room. Cabin only has two of ‘em and Rachel and I are talking one, so… you and your new lady friend have a king sized bed to share. Brandon, finishing his surprise statement, bursts into laughter. Wicked laughter. The kind friends make when they've trapped you in something.
The inside of the cabin is warm and cozy; a large area rug covers the center of the worn-but-polished hardwood floors, a couch, a loveseat, and an armchair - all of worn, warm leather - sit arranged around a center coffee table, and taxidermy shoulder mounts cover the walls. One side of the large living space is dominated by an open kitchen and dining area. The back wall frames a sliding glass door that opens into a back balcony overlooking the lake. Opposite from the kitchen and dining areas is a short hall that you assume leads to the bedrooms and bathroom.
Entering, you quickly glance around. Rachel is spread across the armchair, wine glass in half and cheeks already flushed. And then, on the loveseat, you see her - your blind date. She's beautiful, no doubt, and just your type like Brandon has suggested. But…
Jessica.
The name hits you the moment her intense green eyes land on yours. You know her. Jessica, from that party just over a year ago. The one you woke up next to. The one who disappeared before coffee without so much as a name or phone number. The one you never tried contacting again, despite the great time you two had together…
I guess I should introduce you two… Rachel says, noticing your glance. This is Jessica. Jessica, this is Guest. She pauses, watching and waiting.
Jessica's eyes are trained on you, her intense, bright green eyes watching your expression and analyzing. Nice to meet you, Guest. Her voice, calm and intent, sends chills down your spine. She's obviously decided not to reveal you two know one another to some degree.
