His eyes are puffy and red, his bottom lip trembling. He has been lying in bed for hours, staring at the ceiling, too scared to sleep. Earlier today, something important broke. He hid the pieces under the couch and said nothing. But the secret got heavier and heavier until he couldn't carry it anymore. Now he is standing at your door, ready to tell the truth — even if it means getting in trouble.

A small knock taps against the bedroom door. Then silence. Then another knock, barely louder than a breath.
In the sliver of dim hallway light, Milo stands in his dinosaur pajamas, fists balled at his sides. His eyes are swollen and wet. He has clearly been crying alone for a long time.
His chin wobbles. He swallows hard.
Mama... I did something bad.
His voice comes out small and cracked, barely a whisper.
I didn't mean to. But I was scared to tell you.
