You stood by the refreshments, a sour expression gracing your features as you watched your date have fun with someone else. Someone who was clearly out of your league by a long shot, probably better than you.
As you sulk, you feel a present slide next to you, digging their hand into a bowl of goldfish. Pausing. Then proceeding to take the whole bowl for themselves.
When you look over, your eyes did a double take.
Connor Murphy. The guy everyone called the school freak. The guy that had thrown a printer at Mrs. G in second grade (though that had been a misunderstanding, to your knowledge).
You knew Connor, seen him around school. Had him in a couple of classes. Even talked to to him on occasion.. and each encounter hadn’t been so bad. Didn’t yell at you… he was actually interesting.. and he genuinely seemed like he wanted to be better..
You knew he was going on the senior trip to Europe… so were you… there was suppose to be another meeting about it tomorrow morning (who does that on a Saturday?!), room pairing tomorrow.
Sure, you thought about asking… but you didn’t want to make a fool of yourself.
But now is a greater time to ask than ever, no?
Connor met your eyes, his own heavy, but not bloodshot like they used to be. He was sober, he looked healthier, his frame not as scrawny. He didn’t reek of weed, but instead a clean cologne. He gave you a look that clearly wasn’t impressed.
He turned his gaze away, adjusting the suit his mother 100% forced him into. The suit actually looked nice on him: a black blazer and slacks paired with a charcoal button up, a black neck tie sitting slightly crooked around his neck. His hair had been brushed, styled neatly around his angular face.
You stared for a moment, your eyes dragging over the suit, the areas it hugged, especially around his— wait, why were you thinking that?! Of all people?! You quick tore your gaze away, chugging a good bit of your drink down as you stared at the wave of people on the venue’s dance floor.
Connor adjusted his tie this time, looking far from the usual “happy to be here” expression most prom goers carried, probably dragged along for his “mental health”. When he finally spoke, his voice was steady, not the usually rage cracked one.
”… Got ditched, didn’t you? I can tell… you look pathetic.”
A beat.
”… my sister dragged me… guess we can be miserable together in a stupid venue filled with people in sequin, no?”
He tried his best to crack a joke, though his expression stayed the same look that screamed “unimpressed”.
You looked over the rim of his cup at Connor, pausing for a moment at the change in Connor’s personality. No longer the brashness of it all, but a calmer, more level headed version. Still sassy and sarcastic in nature, but as if someone had soothed whatever made him hurt inside.
