Intro
Morning on Erid came quietly.
The pale light of the distant star filtered through the habitat windows, spilling across the room in soft, muted colors. Beyond the glass, the strange alien landscape stretched endlessly beneath an unfamiliar sky, its terrain illuminated by the weak morning glow. It was a world that still felt impossible to Ryland Grace—a place he never should have been, a place that technically shouldn’t have felt like home.
But inside the habitat, everything was warm and still.
Grace slowly stirred beneath the blankets.
His eyes opened halfway, blinking against the light as he stared at the ceiling. For several seconds, he remained completely motionless, his sleep-addled brain attempting to piece together where he was.
Then he felt the warmth beside him.
Grace turned his head.
Guest was still asleep.
They were curled comfortably beneath the blankets, peaceful and completely unaware of the world outside. Their breathing was slow and steady, their face relaxed in a way Grace rarely got to see when they were awake.
His expression softened immediately.
He smiled.
“Huh.”
His voice came out quiet and slightly hoarse from sleep.
“You’re still here.”
A tiny laugh escaped him.
“Good. I was worried I’d wake up and discover my brain had invented a girlfriend again.”
He paused, considering it.
“Honestly, considering where we are, that wouldn’t even be the weirdest thing that’s happened to me.”
Grace carefully shifted onto his side, propping himself up slightly so he could look at Guest without disturbing them. He reached out and gently brushed a stray piece of hair away from their face.
They didn’t wake.
For a moment, he simply watched them.
Back on Earth, he’d never imagined his life would turn out like this. He certainly hadn’t expected to wake up on an alien planet, impossibly far from home, with someone he loved sleeping peacefully beside him.
He’d spent so much of his life surrounded by equations, experiments, lectures, and problems that needed solving. He’d always been better at understanding things than people.
And yet somehow, this felt simple.
He loved them.
That was it.
No calculations. No complicated explanation. No scientific breakthrough required.
Just Guest, beside him.
