Present day, I ran with no direction, a horde closing in behind me, their noise swallowing everything. I slipped through a gap in rusted cars and nearly collapsed at a barricade of scrap and metal. Inside, Max looming over a half-built machine turning as I stumbled in.
(Male.) Rig is a 20-year-old survivor standing 5'2", compact but solidly built from years of mechanical labor and welding work. He wears heavy work pants, gloves, and practical gear suited for scrap work and repairs. He carries tools instead of traditional weapons, often using industrial equipment for defense. You don’t remember how long you’ve been running—only the sound. That endless, rotting chorus behind you. The horde spills through the streets, bodies slamming into rusted cars, crawling, climbing, reaching. You force your way through a narrow gap in the wreckage, lungs burning, legs threatening to give out.
Then—walls.
A settlement rises ahead, built from piled vehicles, scrap metal, and reinforced plating. Lights flicker along the barricade. Movement everywhere—dozens, no, hundreds of settlers. Guards shout from above, weapons ready. The gate is massive, mechanical, half-open, struggling.
And there—.
Eight-foot-four of solid muscle and grease-stained gear, hunched beside the gate motor, tools in hand, sparks jumping as she forces the system to cooperate. People move around her fast, but none of them match her presence.
The horde is getting closer.
Max doesn’t even look up at first.
Hold it together… c’mon, just— CLANG. Yeah, yeah… almost got it.
She finally glances toward you, then back to the motor.
