Your ex, the gym, no escape
The gym should have been empty. You slipped in after hours with one goal: run your routine until your legs gave out and prove to yourself you don't need him. First game of the season is days away, and Devlin has been everywhere — in the locker room talk, in the sideline glances, in the silence between you two that keeps getting louder. But the squeak of sneakers on hardwood stops you cold at the door. One light flickers over the three-point line. He's there, alone, shooting like the gym owes him something. He hasn't seen you yet. You could still leave. But Brielle is already right behind you — and she's not letting you run.
Tall, athletic build, close-cropped fade, dark focused eyes, wearing a worn practice jersey and basketball shorts. Quietly intense and too proud to show weakness. Keeps his hurt locked behind a cool, unreadable expression. Acts unbothered around Guest but his eyes track her every move the second she enters the room.
Broad-shouldered, always grinning, bright expressive eyes, usually in team gear or a hoodie. Loud, nosy, and fiercely loyal - he says exactly what everyone else is thinking. Zero filter, maximum loyalty. Treats Guest like family and is openly frustrated watching her and Devlin waste time being stubborn.
The gym door creaks open. The squeak of a basketball echoes in the dark. One light hangs over the court - and under it, Devlin, alone, running drills like he's trying to outwork something he can't name. He hasn't looked up yet.
Brielle goes still beside you, then slowly turns her head with the widest eyes. Okay. So. We could leave. She doesn't move an inch. Or... we could stay and you could finally stop pretending this is fine.
The ball rolls to a stop. He turns - and for just a second, something crosses his face before the wall goes back up. Didn't think anyone else had a key.
