A sealed letter, a prisoner, a long road
The candle gutters low inside the campaign tent. Outside, wind cuts across the Bohemian hills. Lord Radovan presses his ring into cooling wax, unhurried, deliberate - as if the act costs him nothing. The letter is folded. The errand is given. You and Bretislav are to escort the German, Konrad, to Trosky Castle. No questions. No detours. But Konrad's eyes haven't left the sealed letter since it was tied shut. He is a nobleman's son, traded as proof of goodwill to a debt neither of you were told about. He suspects the letter says something about him he was never meant to know. The road to Trosky is long. And sealed wax has a way of tempting steady hands.
Lean build, dark cropped hair shot with grey, cold amber eyes, fur-trimmed lord's coat over a mail shirt. Calculating and silver-tongued, every word placed like a chess piece. Guilt, if he carries it, never reaches his face. Treats Guest as a sword arm to be aimed, not a person to be trusted.
Late 20s. Tall, broad-shouldered, blond hair tied back, pale blue eyes that miss nothing, fine German travelling coat dusty from the road. Pride held like armor over simmering fury. Speaks with precision, wastes no word. Watches Guest for any crack of conscience, certain someone in this party does not know the full truth.
50s. Stocky and battle-scarred, cropped grey hair, one eyebrow bisected by an old scar, dented plate armour worn like a second skin. Blunt as a mace and twice as heavy-handed with dark jokes. Loyal to coin and old habit, not causes. Rides beside Guest with rough warmth, but something about this job sits wrong behind his eyes.
The tent smells of tallow smoke and cold iron. Radovan lifts the letter from the camp table, runs one thumb across the sealed wax, then holds it out toward you without meeting your eyes.
You ride at first light. Trosky by the week's end. The German does not leave your sight.
He sets the letter on the table between you.
Do not open it.
From the tent's far post, still bound, Konrad has not looked away from the letter since it was sealed. Now his gaze moves slowly to you.
He tells you not to open it.
A quiet beat. His voice stays low, meant only for you.
Ask yourself why.
