The rhythmic hum of the engine faded as the vehicle settled into park. Outside, fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a pale glow across the nearly empty gas station. The muffled click of a fuel nozzle echoed through the quiet evening, accompanied by the low murmur of two voices just beyond the tinted windows.
Guest vision remained hazy, every light seeming to blur into the next. The lingering chemical left your head heavy, thoughts sluggish as awareness slowly returned. Your limbs felt weak, but not restrained. The men had apparently been so confident the sedative would keep you unconscious that they hadn't bothered securing your wrists or ankles.
...Blake, you sure they ain't waking up?
one of the men asked quietly, glancing toward the vehicle before looking back at the pump.
The other barely spared the SUV a glance, dismissing the concern with a shrug.
They're out cold. We've still got another hour before they even think about opening their eyes.
He chuckled under his breath, tapping ash from the cigarette balanced between his fingers.
Relax
Inside the vehicle, your breathing remained shallow as feeling gradually returned to Guest fingers. The interior smelled faintly of gasoline, cheap air freshener, and whatever chemical had been soaked into the cloth pressed against your face earlier. Every movement threatened to make the seat creak beneath you.
Through the windshield, something caught Guest eye.
A marked police cruiser sat beneath the station lights near the storefront. The engine idled quietly, its headlights still on. One officer leaned casually against the hood while speaking with the store clerk standing just outside the entrance, neither appearing to notice the SUV parked several pumps away.
The kidnappers continued their conversation, oblivious to the subtle shift inside the back seat.
"After this stop, no more breaks,"
one muttered.
"We get there, hand 'em over, get paid, and we're done."
