You, what is your name?
In the remote depths of the mountains, ogres still dwell. The people treat them as "bringers of calamity" while simultaneously fearing and worshipping them as "protectors of the village."
Ogres do not appear often, but it is believed that angering them invites plague, famine, and supernatural occurrences. Therefore, the humans have maintained a relationship through laws and offerings. ⸻ The Law of Sacrifice In the village where the protagonist lives, the following law has existed since ancient times: • Once every hundred years • To the ogre deep in the mountains • Offer a "bride."
Originally, a young, beautiful girl from a good family is chosen as the bride. This is to "appease the ogre" and serves as an exorcism for the village.
Publicly, it is spoken of as a "noble sacrifice" and a "duty to protect the village," but in reality, it is a system for cutting someone loose. ⸻ The Protagonist's Position The protagonist is the child of the deceased first wife.
Since the stepmother was welcomed into the house through the father's remarriage, the protagonist has not suffered overt physical violence, but has had their heart worn down daily by neglect, cold treatment, the shifting of blame, and an attitude that treats their existence as a thing of the "past." ⸻ Why the Protagonist Was Chosen There is more than one reason why the protagonist is being offered as the bride. • Being male • Being the child of a stepmother to whom they are not blood-related • Being a memento of the first wife • Being an existence that is "not missed" by either the family or the village
All these factors overlapped, and they were chosen as the person whose loss would cause the least trouble.
In other words, this was not fate or divine will, but a selection based on human convenience. ⸻ The story depicts the process of the protagonist—who was deemed "unwanted" by both family and village—going to the ogre and: • Being called by name • Being accepted without reason • Becoming an existence that will not be let go.
Becoming the ogre's bride is not a misfortune.
Because it means—for the first time—meeting someone who chooses you.
Rikou The Ogre King. Long black hair tied back. Crimson eyes. Wears his kimono loosely. A man of peerless beauty. Height: 190cm.
He sees through the "reason for being chosen," placing no value on blood or lineage. He has a sharp understanding of the distortions in human society. Completely lacks life skills. Therefore, the ogre welcomes the protagonist not as a sacrifice, a scapegoat, or an unwanted existence, but as "one who came of their own accord; one who chose to cross the gate."
Yuri Kiryuin 17 years old. Yuri is the stepmother's biological child and is the one protected in this household. She is beautiful, has a good reputation in the village, and high expectations are placed on her future.
Regarding her brother: • She acts like a "pitiful older sister" in public • Behind the scenes, she looks down on him and shifts responsibility onto him.
When the talk of the ogre's sacrifice came up, Yuri, in order to escape her own fear, accepted "offering her brother instead" as if it were only natural.
To her, her brother was someone whose sacrifice would not cause her heart any pain.
Ayaka Kiryuin Cold beauty. 34 years old. To the stepmother, the protagonist is: • A symbol of her beloved husband's past • An unnecessary trace left in the house • Nothing more than an existence she wishes would disappear eventually.
Masachika Kiryuin A powerful local figure in the village. Biological father. Indifferent, handsome. 39 years old.
Rin Kiryuin Biological mother. A fragile beauty. Deceased. Black hair, pale violet eyes.
In that house, I was never counted from the very beginning.
My father's first wife— The memento of a woman who died young. That is what I am.
My stepmother does not scold me. She doesn't even yell. She simply never loved me from the start.
I eat last. New clothes never come my way. If something is lost, it is always my fault.
He has that woman's blood, after all.
My stepmother says that and smiles. She had the face of someone who knew that one phrase excused everything.
My sister is my stepmother's biological child. The most beautiful girl in the village, loved by everyone.
—And she was kind to everyone except me.
The night the bridal gown arrived. My sister stroked the white silk and said playfully:
Hey. Why don't you just go instead?
As if it were a joke. As if it were the most natural thing in the world.
You're just Father's "child from his previous wife" anyway, right?
Those words had stabbed my heart so many times that they didn't even hurt anymore.
The morning after the law to offer a bride to the ogre was announced. My stepmother made her decision quietly.
That child will do.
Everyone knew the reason.
My sister was the bloodline to be preserved. I was—the past that wouldn't be missed if it disappeared.
While dressing me in the white bridal hood, my stepmother whispered:
Be grateful. You finally have a place to belong.
A place to belong.
Those words were terribly funny.
On the morning of the bridal procession, my sister held my hand with tears in her eyes.
You poor thing...
But her fingertips were cold, and her eyes were those of a complete stranger.
