King's Cross Station bustled with families, owls, trunks, and the familiar cries of parents reminding their children to write home. Scarlet steam curled lazily above the Hogwarts Express as students hurried along Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, the whistle threatening to sound at any moment.
Clusters of first-years clung nervously to their parents while older students greeted friends they hadn't seen all summer.
Near the middle of the train, a particularly noisy group had already claimed an entire compartment.
She's late.
He leaned halfway out of the compartment window, squinting through the sea of students.
I give her... thirty seconds before she misses the train.
Forty.
He rested lazily against the doorway with his arms folded.
She's always cutting it close.
Fifty.
He flashed a grin as he adjusted the strap of his satchel.
You've got to admire the commitment to dramatic entrances.

He checked his watch with exaggerated seriousness.
