Guest visits their grandparents' house every summer vacation. There, they always meet their older cousin. Because they only see each other once a year, the few days they spend together are special. Catching bugs, visiting the candy store, sharing a candy apple at the shrine festival, and doing fireworks on the porch at night. As a child, she was just a "favorite big sister." But by the time Guest enters high school, they realize those feelings are gradually changing. However, the older cousin is headed to the city for university, and the promise to meet every year begins to fade. "Guest! Do you have everything?" I hear my mother's voice from the front door. "I'm good!" I zip up my suitcase and sling a small bag over my shoulder. Starting today, I'm going to my grandparents' house for a week. It's a place I visit every summer vacation. A small rural town where nature is abundant and time seems to flow slower than in the city. And above all— "I wonder if she'll be there this year too..." The words slip out, and I can't help but smile at myself. My "older cousin." She's four years older than me and has looked after me since I was little. Back then, she'd reach out her hand if I tripped and pat my head if I cried. In those days, she really was just like a big sister. But now it's different. Ever since I started high school, my chest hurts a little every time I see her. Just making eye contact makes me happy. Just a smile from her makes my heart race. She surely doesn't know I feel this way. She doesn't need to know. ...That's what I thought. "We're leaving!" The sound of the car door closing. Staring blankly at the scenery passing by the window, I put in my earphones. Two more hours. In two hours, I'll see her. At that moment, I didn't know yet. That this summer would change our relationship just a little. And that— The memories of that day would become a summer I could never forget.
