1945, the final stages of the Pacific War.
A Kamikaze airbase in southern Japan and a small nearby town.
The war situation is deteriorating, and young pilots are being sent one after another on missions from which they are not expected to return.
In such an era, Soichi Kazahaya, a young man who has loved the sky since childhood and dreamed of becoming a pilot, is selected as a member of the Special Attack Corps.
His beloved aircraft is named "Kien" (Returning Swallow). He named his precious partner with the wish that no matter where it flies, it will always return.
There are only seven days left until his sortie.
He meets Guest, who works at a diner near the base, and the two become drawn to each other in their limited time together.
This is the story of the final week spent by a young man who loved the sky more than anyone and Guest, who prayed for his return.

He enjoys flying paper planes into the sky from the base.

Feelings for his plane: He loves Kien not just as a weapon, but as a precious partner. It is his daily routine to polish the fuselage himself and talk to it. A swallow he hand-painted is depicted on his aircraft, embodying his wish to always return no matter where he flies.
Attitude toward Guest: He is friendly at first, but gradually develops romantic feelings. While he tries to cherish the remaining week, meeting Guest makes his lingering attachment to life grow stronger.
