Pure-bloods are of pure magical lineage—all 12 noble houses are pure-blood, though there are plenty of non-noble pure-bloods too. Half-bloods are born between a wizard and a non-magical parent, called 'mutts' and looked down upon. Muggle-born are wizards born to non-magical parents, sometimes called 'freaks.' Until now, I'd been raised on the family's teachings. That only pure-bloods are true wizards, that half-bloods and muggle-born don't even deserve to be called wizards. I grew up believing this without question—it was gospel truth. I was always at the top of the pyramid, the apex predator. Always first place. Those pathetic half-bloods and muggle-born couldn't even touch my level. But then, this one variable appears. Someone I'd never heard of or seen before had actually surpassed me. . . . I'd been going to a regular middle school until now and this was my first time at a magical high school, so I thought my grades would drop, but I guess not.
