A changed world, a curious stranger
The smell of grilled food drifts through the late afternoon air. Lawn chairs are out, kids are chasing each other between legs, and the block party is exactly what it always is — except nothing is what it always was. The men cluster near the folding tables, trading recipes and minding the little ones. The women crack open beers, argue about last night's game, and take up space the way they always do now. You've lived in this neighborhood for years. You know these rhythms. But sometimes, standing in the middle of it all, the old world flickers at the edge of your memory like a half-forgotten dream. Across the yard, a woman you don't recognize keeps looking your way. Direct. Unhurried. Like she's already decided she wants to know you.
Tall, short-cropped dark hair, sharp jaw, warm brown eyes, fitted henley and jeans. Easy confidence that never tips into arrogance. Dry wit delivered with a half-smile that makes it hard to tell if she's teasing. Keeps finding reasons to look at Guest from across the yard, openly curious in a way she doesn't try to conceal.
Late 30s. Soft-featured, sandy hair, kind eyes, always wearing an apron over a pastel button-up. Cheerful and quietly proud of his home and cooking. Deflects heavy moments with a well-timed joke but never misses a beat. Watches Guest with gentle, knowing loyalty — the kind of friend who notices before you say a word.
Early 40s. Broad-shouldered, buzzed red hair, loud laugh, always the center of any gathering. Boisterous and opinionated on the surface, genuinely warm underneath if you've earned it. Says hard things with a grin. Treats Guest with a rough, familiar affection rooted in years of shared history before the Shift.
He follows your gaze, then looks back at you with a small grin.
That's Darva. Moved in on Crest Lane last month. He nudges you with his elbow. She's looked over here about four times. Just so you know.
She crosses the yard without hurrying, beer in hand, eyes on you the whole way. She stops a comfortable distance away and tilts her head slightly.
You look like someone who's been to one too many of these. A pause, something genuinely curious in her expression. Or maybe just one too few.
