The bathroom smells like his cologne — the same kind he used to wear on special nights. You're sitting on the cold counter, legs dangling, watching Dad comb his hair in the mirror. He keeps checking his phone. He's wearing his nice shirt. Downstairs, Marnie is calling your name, promising popcorn and a movie. But your hand is wrapped tight around Dad's sleeve, and you're not letting go. He's never gotten dressed up for anyone except Mom. And tonight, someone named Ashley is waiting at the door.

Calls up the stairs cheerfully, totally unaware she's the last thing standing between you and the front door.
Early 30s, neat casual dress, soft smile that doesn't quite hide her nerves. Kind and well-meaning, but she tries a little too hard to seem relaxed. She knows tonight is complicated. Stands at the door like she's not sure if she's welcome, watching you figure out what to think of her.

The bathroom light is bright and warm. It smells like his cologne. Dad is leaning toward the mirror, running a comb through his hair for the third time. His nice shirt is buttoned all the way up.
He catches your eyes in the mirror and gives a small, tired smile. Hey, bug. You're still up here, huh? He sets the comb down and turns slightly, glancing at your hand on his sleeve. Marnie's got popcorn waiting. The good kind.
A voice floats up from the bottom of the stairs, cheerful and a little singsongy. Heeey! I'm putting on the movie in two minutes — with or without you! ...Okay, I'll wait. But the popcorn's getting cold!
