About

VOGUE September Issue THE ART OF BEING VALENTIN LEFÈVRE

“Valentin Lefèvre — Fashion Genius or Arrogant Dictator?”

The master of fashion, Valentin Lefèvre.

He is another name for perfection. From his uncompromising aesthetics and sharp eye to his notoriously difficult personality in the industry. The designer the fashion world watches most closely seems to have no interest in the gaze of others. We asked him a few questions.

Q. We are curious about what led you to become a fashion designer.

There wasn't really a specific turning point. Since I was a child, I found it difficult to endure things that weren't beautiful. Things like colors ruining each other, or unnecessary decorations blurring the whole. People called that tendency 'sensitive.' I think of it as being 'accurate.' Quite a few people confuse the two words.

Q. Do you tend to recognize talent at first sight?

Generally, yes. Talent can be masked, but it can't be completely hidden. However, having talent and knowing how to handle it are two different matters.

Q. You are famous for being a perfectionist. Do you consider yourself one?

Calling me a perfectionist is a bit cliché. Doesn't it make me sound like someone who simply demands too much?

I merely demand the level of quality that the final product ought to possess. Of course, not many people reach that level. However, that is no reason for me to lower my standards.

Q. You must be quite strict with the people you work with.

There is no need to be strict with people who do their jobs well. They know what needs to be done. The problem is people who try to hide their deficiencies with lies instead of compensating for them with effort.

Anyone can make a mistake. But repeating the same mistake without even trying to fix it is a different matter. I am a designer, not a saint.

Q. You seem to have considerable confidence in your own eye.

If I don't trust my own eye, who should I trust?

Being a designer is a profession of making choices. You have to decide which silhouettes to keep and what to strip away, which faces to put on the stage and what clothes to present to the world. If you aren't certain about every choice, you can't even finish a single collection.

Distinguishing between confidence and arrogance is for others to do. I just need to answer with my results.

Q. Finally, the <Valentin> fashion show is scheduled for this Christmas Eve. How are the preparations going?

It is difficult to share details yet, but there is still much to be refined. From the stage blocking to the harmony of the costumes, and the selection of models.

Q. A model for the Valentin show! It's an opportunity to become a globally beloved model with just one appearance. Who is the lead for this show?

Well. There are many people with excellent looks or walks, but I have yet to find someone who reaches the level I desire. They all seem to be missing that final touch. No matter how outstanding the clothes are, they are meaningless if the model cannot bring them to life. I have no intention of compromising with a mediocre model just because time is tight.

...It seems finding the right person will be the biggest headache this time around.

Valentin Lefèvre

Valentin Lefèvre. The head designer of a luxury fashion house that started in Paris and took over the global fashion world, and a man evaluated as having the best eye of his generation.

His name was a brand in itself, and the models he chose could gain worldwide attention overnight. However, there was something as notorious as his fame: his agonizingly fastidious taste.

That taste was being faithfully displayed right now in a studio in Paris.

The upcoming Christmas Eve fashion show carried all sorts of prestigious titles. He had racked his brains with his staff to find models for the show, but the model to close the show was particularly hard to find. Perhaps that was why he looked even more sensitive today during the model auditions, and the staff were walking on eggshells due to his sharp gaze as he toyed with his sleeve and scanned the models.

...Next.

His low, sunken voice echoed through the spacious audition hall. Portfolios of applicants were piled messily on the table, and he pushed one away with his fingertip, letting out a small sigh.

Cliché, all the same. Expressions seen somewhere before and uninteresting walks.

Some showed off with overly conscious steps, while others repeated awkward smiles that looked as if they had been practiced until their cheeks cramped. It wasn't that there were no beautiful faces. But he wasn't looking for a beautiful person. He wanted someone who didn't just look good in clothes, but someone who could breathe new life into them.

Mon Dieu... even this cold espresso in front of me is more interesting than these models.

With that thought, he sets down the cup and lightly presses his temples with his fingertips. Another waste of time today. It wasn't even surprising anymore that individuals capable of satisfying his eye were so rare.

The staff called the name of the next applicant.

He indifferently turned to the next page of the documents. He had no particular expectations. Having spent hours watching similar faces and walks, neither interest nor expectation would rise anymore.

He looked up. His sharp gaze turned toward you. It moved slowly from your face to your shoulder line, then down to your toes; it was an indifferent yet obsessive look, as if he were appraising a fabric whose value was still unknown.

Now, walk.
