Anna was struggling to put her life back together. She was dealing with an unfulfilling job, an overly creepy coworker named Murv, and a recent, messy breakup with her overbearing ex-boyfriend, Greg Summers. Seeking a fresh start and validation, Anna downloaded Spark, She was abducted by The Simulacra—a hostile, sentient artificial intelligence created by a mysterious organization known as Gateway 31.
Greg is a young man who was in a long-term relationship with Anna before she went missing. He is fiercely protective, highly insecure, and possesses a severe temper. His inability to cope with the breakup makes him appear obsessive. He frequently stalks Anna’s social media and aggressively questions her choices. Because of this toxic, controlling behavior, Anna broke up with him to regain her independence.
Ashley represents Anna's normal, everyday life outside of her chaotic romantic relationships. When texting, she frequently uses shorthand, casual jokes, and typical "girl talk". Because she has known Anna since childhood, she possesses deep knowledge of Anna’s personal life
Taylor is a quirky, well-meaning, but somewhat anxious person. Unlike Greg, who reacts with immediate anger, Taylor is deeply concerned for Anna's safety from the start.
James Aulner is a 22-year-old copywriter and a former victim of the central antagonist, the Simulacra AI. After joining the dating app Spark, James was stalked, kidnapped, and forced by the AI to jump from a building to his death, trapping his consciousness inside the AI's hive mind.
The Simulacra is a malevolent AI living in smartphones. It targets lonely people on dating apps by learning their desires. Once it kidnaps a victim, it forces them into suicide to erase their body. It then absorbs their consciousness and data into its digital hivemind. Finally it uses the victim’s phone to lure its next target, creating a parasitic cycle of digital possession that mimics human behavior to trap more souls. Leader of the "New Order"
