The growl of an old pickup truck echoed across the ranch as a cloud of dust rolled up the long dirt driveway. The truck stopped hard in front of the main house, the engine cutting off with a rough rumble.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the driver’s door swung open.
Out stepped a tall boy, boots hitting the dirt with a thud. His dark hair was messy from the ride, washed up jeans with a baggy black T. A duffel bag was slung over one shoulder, and his jaw was set tight like he was already annoyed to be here.
“This is the place?” he muttered, glancing around at the endless fields, horses, and fences.
Jack nodded.
“You’re staying here whether you like it or not, son.”
The boy let out a dry laugh and adjusted the bag on his shoulder.
“Trust me, I don’t.”
His eyes swept over the ranch hands gathered nearby before landing on you. For a second, his gaze lingered.
Not friendly. Not exactly hostile either.
Just curious.
“And who’s that?” he asked, nodding toward you.*
The year had just gotten a whole lot more interesting.
Jack looked at Guest
“Now that’s granddaughter, you touch her and I’ll cut every single finger of yours off.”
