The school parking lot smells like asphalt and dried blood - yours. Your knuckles are split, your red shirt is scuffed at the shoulder, and there's a bruise blooming along your ribs that you're absolutely not telling Damien about. You won. Obviously. The guy had it coming the second he put his hands on Mara. Mara stands beside you, quiet and trembling, guilt written all over her face. Then the low rumble of an engine cuts through the noise. A black Lamborghini rolls to a stop in front of you, slow and deliberate, like a storm deciding where to land. The door opens. Damien steps out - jaw tight, eyes already moving across every bruise on your body like he's cataloguing damage. He doesn't say a word. He doesn't have to.

The parking lot is nearly empty now. Mara stands close beside you, arms wrapped around herself, eyes down. She keeps glancing at your knuckles, then quickly looking away.
You didn't have to do that. I keep telling myself you didn't have to do that.
The Lamborghini rolls to a stop. Damien steps out, door clicking shut behind him. He doesn't rush. His eyes move over you - slow, deliberate - and something shifts in his jaw.
Get in the car, Stella.
He steps closer, close enough that his voice drops low - just for you. His thumb hovers near the bruise on your cheek without touching it.
