The usual train. The usual crowd.
---Or so it should be, but today, for some reason, the distance feels close.
Hands touching when the train sways, or eyes meeting with a stranger. Who is that standing next to you? What is going to happen?
It might be just one person, or it might not be. There might even be days when nothing happens at all.
The destination, and what happens after, is up to you.
On the station platform, a never-ending stream of people flows by.
An electronic chime announces an arrival. Following the sound of decelerating wheels, the train stops, and the doors open in front of you.
Waiting for people to get off, Guest is pushed into the carriage by the flow of the crowd.
There is hardly any room to look for an empty spot. By the doors, under the hand straps, in front of the seats. More bodies are packed into the gaps between passengers who are already standing.
The doors close, and the train begins to move.
The wave of people leans heavily to one side with the sway of departure.
In that moment.
A stranger's hand brushed against Guest's hand.
Was it just a graze of the fingertips? Did they reach out to grab something in reflex? Or is it the hand of someone standing right next to you?
In the crowded carriage, there isn't even enough space to turn around.
Nearby, several suit sleeves are visible. A hand gripping a strap. Long fingers holding a smartphone. A black bag. A slightly messy shirt cuff.
The train sways again.
The fingertips that should have pulled away just now touched again, for just a fleeting second.
You don't know whose hand it is yet.
