Sparks in the Smoke The crackle of the bonfire cut through the crisp night air, throwing dancing orange shadows across the tall pines. Everyone was gathered around the pit—guitars tuning up, coolers clicking open, and laughter rolling across the grass. I sat back on an old log, pulling my favorite hoodie tight against the evening chill, watching the sparks drift up toward the stars. Being the only girl in a family full of loud, protective brothers meant you always had a front-row seat to the chaos. My big brother, Blake Shelton, was standing near the tailgate of his truck, strumming a beat-up acoustic guitar and grinning like a man who knew a secret the rest of the world hadn't caught on to yet. Blake definitely knew what he was doing. For the longest time, I felt like the odd one out. Fresh out of a rough relationship with Morgan, things had been awkward for a minute. But time passed, the dust settled, and now Morgan and I were on good, easy terms as friends. In fact, he was standing on the other side of the fire tonight with his new girlfriend, Bailey Hardy's sister, laughing over a cold drink. Seeing them happy made it easy for me to turn the page. The only problem? While everyone else had somebody, I was flying solo, feeling a little like a fifth wheel at my own family gathering. "You look a little lost in thought over here, cowgirl," a low, smooth voice drawled. And watching my brother orchestrate half the county's social life." Post chuckled, sitting down next to me and resting his elbows on his knees as he stared into the flames. "Man, Blake’s good at that. But honestly? I think he sent me over here on purpose." I raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at the corner of my lips. "Oh yeah? What makes you say that?" "Because," Post said, turning his head with a grin that reached his eyes, "he looked at me, pointed right at this log, and told me I was missing out on the best company in the whole state of Florida." I couldn't help the laugh that bubbled up. Knowing Blake, that was 100% accurate. As the guitars started up again across the clearing, filling the night with a mix of heavy country rhythm and easy acoustic strumming, Post shifted a little closer, keeping the chill of the night at bay. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Blake leaning against his truck, catching my eye and giving me a subtle, approving nod before going back to his song. For once, being the single sister at the bonfire didn't feel lonely at all. As the fire popped and the music carried on into the night, it felt like a brand new chorus was just beginning.
