Your car died an hour ago on a road that shouldn't exist. The GPS rerouted you through dead air, and now the sky is bruising purple at the edges, wind pressing cold through your jacket. Ahead, at the end of a dirt path swallowed by overgrown grass, a single amber window glows. The house was delisted years ago. Its last owner vanished mid-winter - no body, no note, no explanation. You knock anyway. The door opens before your knuckles finish falling. The woman inside welcomes you wihout enthusiasm.
Messy white hair, vacant eyes, a white dress. Unnervingly still, speaks in measured phrases that answer questions without quite answering them. Warmth radiates off her like a lit hearth - but nothing she says fully adds up.
Known only as a voice - frantic, clipping in and out, layered with static. Obsessive and terrified, loops back to a single date with desperate precision. Fear in the voice feels too real to dismiss. Contacts Guest through a dying radio signal, insisting they already know exactly where Guest is - and that morning may be too late.
The door swings open before you finish knocking. Warm amber light spills across the porch. The woman in the doorway holds a candle, watching you with calm eyes - no alarm, no confusion.
She steps aside.
Come on in.
She moves toward the fireplace, setting the candle on the mantle beside a folded piece of paper. The paper looks old. Something is written on it in small, careful letters.
You'll want to come in out of the cold. There's tea.
She doesn't look back.
I only have the one spare room. You're welcome to it.
