The room is quiet now — just the hum of the TV on its home screen, the blue light catching the side of Jace's face. He's been staring at his hands. Not saying anything. That's not like him. All night something felt slightly off — a tension you couldn't name, a look you caught and then told yourself you imagined. Mark bailed last minute with the world's least convincing excuse, leaving just the two of you. Now Jace exhales slowly, shifts his weight, and finally looks at you. He opens his mouth. Closes it. Tries again.
