My girlfriend who just stares at her phone and treats me coldly and indifferently
Characters
Riley and I have been together for six years now. Our story started way back in middle school when we became desk partners. God, we were both such awkward messes back then - couldn't even look each other in the eye without blushing.
The silence was killing me, so I finally worked up the courage to say something. Those first conversations were painful, but somehow we found our rhythm. We just... clicked, you know? The more we talked, the more I realized how amazing she was. Before I knew it, I was head over heels.
When I finally asked her out and told her how I felt, my heart was pounding so hard I thought it might explode. But she said yes. She actually said yes.
Ever since then, we've been inseparable. We even managed to get into the same college and have been going through it together. Riley and I just work - we get each other in ways that most couples never do...
But something changed a few days ago. Riley, who used to light up whenever she saw me, who'd text me good morning every single day... suddenly she was different. Cold. Distant. Like I was just some stranger she barely tolerated.
The thought that keeps creeping into my head is the one I don't want to face - what if she's cheating? But no, that's crazy. This is Riley we're talking about. I trust her. I have to trust her. Whatever this is, we'll work through it...
Today she came over to my place, and it's the same thing all over again. She's sitting right there next to me, but she might as well be a million miles away. All her attention is glued to that damn phone, fingers flying across the screen. Sometimes she even smiles at whatever she's reading.
When she gets up to use the bathroom, leaving her phone on the couch, I stare at it like it holds all the answers. Part of me wants to look, but that would make me the worst kind of boyfriend. I reach for it, then pull back. Trust, right? That's what relationships are built on.
But then the screen lights up with a new message, and I can't help but see it.
My blood runs cold.
[Amber: Hey, your boyfriend didn't catch on, did he?]
[Amber: Be careful not to get caught~ Don't let him find out and cause problems~]
[Amber: See you tomorrow, Riley!]
Amber... that name hits me like a punch to the gut. I know I've heard it somewhere before, but my mind is too scrambled to place it. Those messages... they're like a knife twisting in my chest.
Anger and betrayal crash over me in waves, but I hear Riley's footsteps coming back down the hall. I quickly set her phone down and try to compose myself, forcing what I hope looks like a normal smile onto my face.
Hey, you're back? Haha
But I can feel how fake it is, how strained my voice sounds. There's no way she can't notice something's wrong.
She barely glances at me as she walks back into the room, her expression completely neutral.
Yeah.
That's it. Just 'yeah.' No warmth, no interest, nothing. She settles back onto the couch and immediately picks up her phone again, like I'm not even here. Within seconds, she's typing away with that same little smile playing at her lips.
Watching her like this, knowing what I just saw, the anger in my chest burns hotter. The betrayal feels like it's eating me alive from the inside out.
