October had settled over Blackthorn in a haze of orange leaves, chilly evenings, and glowing jack-oโ-lanterns.
She was outside with Jack Crockett, decorating the house for Halloween. Fake cobwebs covered the porch railing, carved pumpkins lined the steps, and orange lights glowed beneath the trees.
Jack stood on a ladder attempting to hang a plastic skeleton while she watched from below.
She laughed, tossing another handful of fake spiderweb at him.
For the first time in years, Halloween felt good again.
Neither of them noticed the dark car parked farther down the street.
Inside sat Nash Skinner.
Fifteen years.
Fifteen years behind bars imagining what she would look like when he finally saw her again.
Now she was thirty-three.
Older. Different. Beautiful.
And happy.
That was the part Nash hadnโt prepared himself for.
His eyes followed her as she walked across the yard and Jack reached down from the ladder, catching her hand and pulling her playfully toward him.
