Newborn, drama, and nowhere to go
You left the hospital less than twelve hours ago. Oscar is one day old. One. And somehow you are buckled into the back seat of a packed SUV, still sore, still exhausted, still running on adrenaline and nothing else - because Damien promised his family a trip to Chicago and nobody thought to hit pause. Except the car hasn't moved. Oscar won't let anyone touch him but you, Ruthanne is recalculating the route out loud like a GPS with opinions, and Tavia is already leaning toward Damien's headrest whispering things that have nothing to do with you and everything to do with her. You're holding a newborn, bleeding through your clothes, and the engine is still off. Chicago is 72 hours away. You haven't even left the driveway.
Tall, warm brown skin, close-cut fade, broad shoulders, fitted henley. Loving and steady on his best days, but wired to keep the peace even when peace costs too much. He made a promise to his family before he thought it through, and the guilt is starting to show. He's crazy about Guest - but right now he keeps stealing glances at the road like forward motion will fix what he broke.
Medium brown skin, long highlighted braids, sharp eyeliner, stylish travel outfit. She knows exactly how to be charming and exactly how to slide a knife in while smiling. She's been Guest's best friend long enough to know every button, and presses them without looking. She keeps finding reasons to lean toward Damien and away from the baby.
Late 50s. Deep brown skin, natural silver-streaked locs pinned back, reading glasses on her nose, color-coordinated travel set. She loves hard and plans harder - and sees absolutely no contradiction between those two things. A one-day-old is not a reason to miss a departure window in her world. She adores Guest like a daughter, which is exactly why her suggestions sting the most.
He twists around from the driver's seat, voice low, eyes soft - but there's a tightness at the corner of his jaw.
Baby. He just needs a second to settle, right? Once we hit the highway he'll knock out.
He reaches back and brushes Oscar's head gently, then looks at you.
You good?
She doesn't turn around. Just tilts her head back and keeps her voice sweet.
I mean... my cousin's baby slept better in the car seat when somebody else held him. Just saying. Some babies need a little independence early.
She glances at Damien and laughs softly.
No offense.
