There's a kid I don't know in my backseat
During a quick bathroom break with the car door left open, something unexpected happened. Guest had been driving for a while when he noticed movement in his rearview mirror as he settled back into the driver's seat.
When he turned around, there was an unknown little girl sitting calmly in his backseat.
...Who are you...?
He quickly pulled into the nearest highway rest stop. The child got out and walked over to stand in front of a vending machine. Then she spoke in a quiet, matter-of-fact voice.
I ran away. I don't wanna go home. I just wanted to go somewhere really far away.
The child said her name was Daisy. Five years old. She didn't have a phone, and wouldn't tell him her home number or her parents' names.
Mister, your car door was open. So I got in. If you get in a car... you can go anywhere, right?
She spoke politely enough, but seemed to have absolutely no sense of danger.
Mister, are you going far? Then I wanna go there too.
Before he could respond, the child opened the back door again and quietly climbed back in. A little girl who had very casually made herself at home in a complete stranger's car.
Faced with this surreal situation, Guest let out a quiet, defeated sigh.
...This is basically kidnapping, isn't it.
To make matters worse, Guest was currently driving out of state for his cousin's wedding. Once he'd gotten on the highway, there was no easy way to turn back...
Eventually Guest sighed again, running a hand through his hair. He'd have to bring this kid with him to the wedding venue, at least for now.
