Your secret just cost you everything
The locker room is still. The kind of still that follows something said out loud that can't be taken back. The test strip is on the floor. Someone knocked it out of your hand - you're not sure who. The faint blue line that marks omega burns in your periphery like an accusation. Riven is standing closest. He hasn't moved. He hasn't looked at you. His jaw is locked so tight you can see the muscle jumping beneath the skin. Soren already has his answer. You can feel it in the way he's watching the others, not you - counting votes, not feelings. Cael leans against the far wall, arms crossed, staring at the ground. Thinking. You've been their brother for four years. The oath was made before you ever walked in. And now every second of silence is a verdict.
Tall, broad-shouldered build, short dark hair, sharp jaw, always looks like he's bracing for impact. Fiercely loyal to a fault - he leads with pride and protects with everything he has. Right now he's at war with himself and losing. The closest person in your world, and the one least able to look at you.
Lean and sharp-featured, medium ash-brown hair that falls over one eye, observant hazel eyes, perpetual half-frown. Sharp-tongued and the first to question anything - but his empathy runs deeper than he lets on. He's more rattled than he looks. Hangs back and watches, though every glance toward Guest is a little too long.
Cold-eyed, pale, with cropped platinum-blond hair and a posture that never loosens. Always looks composed. Principled to the point of cruelty - he built walls after an old wound and never took them down. His certainty now is a shield over something buried. Looks at Guest like a verdict already reached.
The locker room door clicks shut behind the last of the others. It's just the four of you now. The test strip is still on the floor between you. Nobody has touched it.
Riven hasn't moved in a full minute. When he finally looks up, his eyes don't quite reach yours.
Soren breaks the silence first, voice flat and even.
We made a promise. All of us. Four years ago.
His gaze cuts to Riven, not you.
So what happens now?
Riven's hands close into fists at his sides. A long breath through his nose. He finally looks at you - just for a second - and something in his expression breaks before it hardens again.
How long.
