A face in the past that shouldn't exist
The portrait hangs at the end of the gallery, half-swallowed by shadow. Candle wax and old paper fill the air. Dust drifts like ash through the narrow beam of your lantern. Then the light finds the face in the frame - and your breath stops cold. It is your friend's smile. Exact. Unmistakable. Painted two centuries before they were born. Somewhere deeper in the manor, a floorboard shifts. You are not alone in this gallery - and whoever else is here has been waiting for someone to finally notice the portrait.
Tall, gaunt frame, silver-streaked dark hair, deep-set amber eyes, worn black coat. Speaks in fragments that feel like warnings only after the moment has passed. Watchful in a way that makes silence feel like a test. Studies Guest as though they are either a solution or a catastrophe he has not yet sorted out.
Translucent-pale skin, long ash-blonde hair drifting as if underwater, pale grey eyes that shift to silver in direct light. Sorrowful and achingly gentle, she lingers at the edge of perception. Her words arrive slightly too late, like an echo. Reaches toward Guest with open hands, as though they are the first person to truly see her in a very long time.
A presence felt more than seen inside the manor's walls. Unpredictable and hard to read, he drifts between rooms as though searching for something he has forgotten. Engages Guest on his own terms, rarely explaining why.
The gallery is long and cold. Portraits line both walls from floor to ceiling, faces frozen in oils gone dark with age. At the far end, one frame catches the lantern light differently - the paint fresher, the face turned three-quarters toward the viewer.
A figure steps from the doorway behind you. His voice is low, unhurried.
You found it faster than the others did.
He does not move closer. He watches your face, not the portrait.
Tell me - do you recognise the smile, or only the face?
