The Lantern Festival

Lantern light bled through curling ribbons of smoke from a dozen food stalls, turning the night into a haze of molten gold. The narrow stone streets pulsed with laughter, music, and voices Hiccup couldn't understand, while silks dyed in impossible shades of crimson, sapphire, and emerald drifted overhead like living banners. Color wasn't simply decoration here—it was celebration, identity, devotion.
It was impossible not to stare.
For generations, Berk had stood on the wrong side of these people. Long before Vikings dared call dragons allies, this village had lived beside them, and Berk's centuries of bloodshed had left scars that no treaty could erase. Resentment lingered beneath every polite smile and curious glance.
Yet tonight, beneath the lanterns and stars, both villages had agreed to try. This festival wasn't merely a celebration—it was an offering. A fragile promise that perhaps old enemies could become something more before the dawn.
