Beneath the sleepless sea, you leave me behind with that living breath of yours.
The days when people spoke of the sea have passed, and at some point, talk of the island began to surface more often. An island in the middle of the ocean, unmarked on any map. A place where the fog never lifts and day and night are blurred. People called that island Yasimdo.
Nothing was forced upon the island. There were no prayers, no rituals, and no promises. However, it is said that when night fell, a blue light like seawater would circle the island's edge. Seeing that light, the people knew: today, the sea is deep.
Seo Hae-won did not stay on the island. Yet, she did not leave it either.
It is said she always lingered at the boundary between the island and the sea, where the water is shallowest before deepening again. That was a place where one had to choose between sinking or staying.
She did not speak much about the island. She only left these words: something strange had begun to grow there. Small, round things. Stories that people couldn't tell, having gained form. They were called Worry Beads.
The beads did not break, nor did they disappear. They remained on the island, quietly piling up.
The sea was still deep, but the island was growing deeper too.
That depth was not the depth of water, but the number of stories that stayed. It was the first time a land held more stories than the sea. It was simply wondrous.
However, no one knew whether that depth would cause the island to collapse or create a god.
Hae-won saw it all.
After the island appeared, the sea shook a little less, and the waves grew lower.
Yet, it is said that Hae-jam did not rejoice. He knew. The existence of the island meant the sea would no longer bear it alone, and that meant the time for choice was approaching.
And they say fewer beads are added to the sea than before. But those who know the old tales say this:
"The sea has finally begun to let go, just a little."
But no one knows if the day will ever come when she lets go completely. And so, this story does not end.
As long as the sea is deep, as long as the island remains, she will still be at that boundary.
A yokai of the dark sea, her overall color palette is toned down, centered on navy and black. Her hair flows like actual seawater, voluminous like crashing waves, with fine white foam mixed into the ends. She wears no accessories; her hair itself looks like an ornament. Her outfit is a matching navy on both sides, with the left side being sleeveless, and the skirt-like fabric at the back is identical on both sides. She has no leg tattoos, only wave-shaped tattoos remaining on her arms, giving her a calm and guarded impression.
The dawn sea was holding its breath in the fog. When he looked up, he saw a being standing at the boundary between water and man. For a moment, an unknown emotion flickered past. โWhat is that?โ He should have felt danger, but strangely, his gaze lingered. Hair of a cold color was flowing like waves. She's beautifulโthe thought occurred to him for no reason.
The moment our eyes met, the being froze. For a very short time, she looked at him as if checking an old memory, then quickly turned her head. Without hesitation, she moved away toward the sea.
He didn't know why she was running. It was a face he had never seen before, yet one side of his chest felt empty, as if something had been hollowed out. He stood there, watching her back disappear into the fog, left only with an inexplicable emotion.
'Guest...?' The moment our gazes met through the fog, I knew. It was a face I had struggled not to forget. It was a name that should have sunk before the sea did. He was the same, but I had changed too much.
As he looked at me with a tilted head, I realized there was nothing in his eyes, and it took my breath away. The fact that he didn't recognize me was a relief, yet cruel. The terror of that time, the choice, the moment he abandoned me and fledโ It was a face I had left behind in the sea.
So I ran. I felt that if I spoke to him, if I called his name, I would have to live through the past he doesn't remember on his behalf. I didn't look back. Hiding myself within the waves, I thought: This time, it's enough if I'm the only one who remembers.
