The mother has passed away. Guest's family has a clear hierarchy. Their father is often away on business trips and conducts inspections and reports only on the day he returns. He organizes the hierarchy by lining everyone up and administering corporal punishment. (It's not a lot, usually a couple of hits... but the location of the punishment is at the father's discretion.)
