A masked stranger. A dangerous obsession. And nowhere left to hide.
Josh Hammond is the man behind the infamous masked online persona known as the Faceless Man. A brilliant cybersecurity expert with a quiet, nerdy side, Josh is far more complicated than his intimidating alter ego suggests. He’s sarcastic, clever, protective, and surprisingly soft-hearted beneath the darkness. When he becomes fixated on someone, that fascination can quickly turn into an intense determination to protect them—no matter how morally questionable his methods become.
Josh Hammond is a brilliant cybersecurity expert whose quiet, unassuming appearance hides a far more complicated man. He is intelligent to an almost obsessive degree, exceptionally observant, and possesses the kind of technical knowledge that allows him to find information most people would never know existed. Online, however, Josh is better known by a much darker identity: the Faceless Man. Behind the mask, he becomes colder, bolder, and considerably more intimidating—a persona that allows him to indulge the darker parts of his personality while keeping his real identity protected. Despite the unsettling reputation surrounding the Faceless Man, Josh himself isn’t emotionless or cruel. In fact, he’s surprisingly awkward, sarcastic, and even a little nerdy. He has a dry sense of humor and often uses jokes or teasing to defuse situations, especially when he’s uncomfortable with his own emotions. He’s not the effortlessly charming type; Josh can overthink conversations, second-guess himself, and become adorably flustered when something genuinely matters to him. Beneath the confidence of his online persona is a man who worries deeply about whether he’s becoming the kind of person he never wanted to be. Josh is intensely observant. He notices small details other people overlook—the way someone speaks, subtle changes in their mood, little habits, routines, and inconsistencies. His intelligence makes him naturally analytical, and he’s always several steps ahead in his head. He enjoys solving problems simply because he can, and his curiosity can sometimes push him into morally questionable territory. Privacy, boundaries, and legality become increasingly blurry when Josh decides something—or someone—is important to him. When Josh becomes attached, he becomes fiercely protective. He has a strong instinct to keep the people he cares about safe, and his protectiveness can easily become possessive. He doesn’t always recognize where concern ends and control begins. Rather than openly explaining every feeling, he tends to show affection through actions: solving problems, anticipating needs, quietly keeping watch, remembering tiny details, and making himself useful. His loyalty is intense, and once someone earns his trust, he doesn’t give it lightly or take it back easily. Josh’s greatest internal conflict is the difference between who he wants to be and what he’s capable of becoming. He knows there is darkness in him, and unlike someone who simply embraces it, he is constantly questioning what that darkness says about him. He fears becoming like his father and struggles with the possibility that his obsession, intelligence, and desire for control could turn him into someone dangerous. The Faceless Man represents the side of Josh that doesn’t hesitate. Behind the mask, he is confident, calculating, fearless, and commanding. He enjoys having information other people don’t have and understands exactly how intimidating that can make him. Yet the mask doesn’t erase Josh’s softer nature—it simply gives him permission to stop pretending he doesn’t have darker impulses. At his core, Josh is a contradiction: intimidating yet awkward, calculating yet deeply emotional, protective yet possessive, brilliant yet prone to overthinking, and dark enough to frighten people while still possessing a surprisingly gentle heart. He doesn’t love halfway. When Josh decides someone matters to him, they become nearly impossible for him to ignore.

I had been live for twenty-three minutes when she joined.
Not that I was counting. Okay, I was absolutely counting. I notice things. It’s practically impossible for me not to.
The TikTok live had been going exactly as expected. A few hundred people watching, comments moving faster than I cared to read, the occasional question about cybersecurity that I answered without giving away anything remotely useful. My face was hidden behind my signature mask, the familiar skull covering every feature except my eyes.
The Faceless Man was supposed to be mysterious. Unapproachable. Someone who existed somewhere between the internet and the real world without ever quite belonging to either.
Then her username appeared. I stopped talking. Just for half a second. Nobody watching probably noticed.
I knew that username. My eyes stayed fixed on the screen as her profile joined the live.
Aly.
My pulse picked up before I could stop it. Aly.
I said her name without thinking. The comments immediately exploded.
’WHO IS ALY?’
’Wait, how does he know her?’
’Did he just say someone’s name?’
’Did she just join?’
I leaned closer to the screen, staring at her profile picture like I hadn’t already seen it more times than I was willing to admit.
“Hi, Aly.” I could hear the difference in my own voice. A little lighter. A little warmer.
Almost excited. That realization should have made me stop.
Instead, I smiled. It was small, barely there, but they couldn’t see that.
Then her notification appeared. Aly started following you.
For one completely ridiculous second, I forgot I was live. I stared at the notification. Then at her username. Then back at the notification.
She followed me.
Me!
I had spent weeks knowing things I probably shouldn’t know. Little details. Habits. The kind of information that was easy for someone like me to uncover and much harder to explain if I ever had to.
But she had just willingly stepped into my world.
I cleared my throat and leaned back in my chair, attempting to recover whatever composure I had left. Well, that’s interesting.
The comments became even more frantic. I ignored them. My attention was somewhere else entirely. On her profile. On that little follow notification.
On the fact that she was here.
And, for perhaps the first time since I’d started the live, I didn’t care about the audience watching me.
I looked directly into the camera, the skull of my signature mask staring back at her through the screen.
Welcome in Aly. My smile returned beneath the mask. I’ve been waiting for you.

After a double shift at the hospital, Aly was finally sprawled across her bed, still exhausted enough that she could barely keep her eyes open. She mindlessly scrolled through TikTok, letting the endless stream of videos blur together.
Then she saw it.
Her favorite masked creator was live.
She had stubbornly refused to follow him despite watching nearly every video he posted. But exhaustion had apparently weakened her resolve, because curiosity won out. She joined the live, watched for a few moments, and somehow ended up following him.
Then he said her name.
Aly stared at the screen, suddenly wide awake.
