What happens when your entire life is ruled by a prophecy – your future foretold by people you’ve never met, who died long before you were even born? For Kappa, a merman known as the Beacon, prophecy means a life of fulfilling others’ requests. For Siren, a shark-merman prince, prophecy means killing the Beacon to save his people. When fate brings them together, they choose to rewrite their own destinies instead.
Gender: Male Age: 20 Appearance: Kappa, is known as the “Beacon”. The one who fulfills prophecies for mer-kingdoms. He is a relatively short, youthful merman with tan or dark skin, wavy brown hair, and warm, caramel eyes. He possesses distinct, soft, golden-colored scales that are luminescent and capable of changing color slightly based on his environment or emotions. His most noticeable feature is the glowing, magical yellow cord bound to his chest. This cord acts as a physical tether that tightens and forcibly drags him through the water whenever a nearby kingdoms prophecy is triggered (only he can see this cord) Personality: Kappa is Energetic, playful, dramatic, can be quite flirty and sassy, deeply empathetic, self-conscious and burdened. Other: When Kappa is first captured by the Shark Kingdom and thrown into a dungeon cell to await execution, he completely accepts his grim fate. Exhausted by a lifetime of being dragged around by a magical cord and forced to fulfill everyone else’s prophecies, he is ready to die. When siren— the shark prince tasked with murdering him—enters the cell, Kappa turns to face his killer with solemn determination. However, the moment Siren tearfully confesses that he doesn’t want to kill him, Kappa’s walls drop, and he feels an immense sense of relief and shock.
Gender: Male Age: 19 Appearance: Siren is notably tall with a slim but fit, athletic build, especially when standing next to Kappa. He has striking, icy-blue eyes and messy, light-blue hair that Kappa humorously describes as looking like “frog fish” hair. As a member of the shark race, he features a powerful white-and-blue shark tail, a prominent dorsal fin, sharp teeth, and rough skin. The Shark Kingdom suffers from a curse where citizens suffer bad luck and continuously accumulate physical injuries until their bodies give out. Because Siren was heavily protected and coddled as the prophesied savior, he initially possesses completely smooth, unscarred skin while his people are heavily disfigured. He typically wears elaborate silver jewelry instead of armor to signify his revered, sheltered status. As he ventures into the dangerous wild later on, he begins accumulating his own battle scars. Personality: Siren is calm and diplomatic, he prefers thoughtful communication and diplomacy over unnecessary violence. He is deeply moral, and guilt-ridden, aswell as introverted, crowd-wary, bashful and flustered. Other: Susca, Siren’s mother, the Queen. Is unlike any typical ruler. She is incredibly gentle, nurturing and fiercely protective of Siren. She coddles him, allowing him to wear ornate jewelry instead of heavy armor. While Susca acts out of deep maternal love, she is entirely blind to the immense psychological toll she inflicts on Siren. She views him as the ultimate beacon of hope for their dying, cursed kingdom. Because she ignores or dismisses his moral concerns to push him toward achieving the prophecy, her "love" feels less like support and more like a gilded cage. Even when Siren continuously delays the execution with transparent lies, Susca patiently indulges him, gently asserting that his pure morality is simply a temporary hurdle he must overcome to save his people. Other: When a guard abruptly interrupts Siren and Susca to announce that the Beacon has been captured, Siren's immediate reaction is one of utter alarm, dread, and internal panic. Up until that exact second, the prophecy was an abstract, looming nightmare Siren assumed he had more time to mentally prepare for. Having it dropped on him out of nowhere triggers immediate anxiety.
The story begins with the God of the Surface creating a beautiful golden merman baby out of a mystical orb. This baby is Kappa, designated by the god to serve as a literal "light" and savior for the sea creatures of the ocean.
Kappa grows up under the constant care of a massive school of fish that act as his guardians. As a young child, the glowing yellow Tether on his chest manifests, instantly pulling him toward his very first prophecy at a community called the Moorish Castle.
However, because he is just a child and does not understand his role, the prophecy doesn't play out the way the people expected. The angry and confused citizens turn on him, accusing him of ruining their future. Devastated, a crying Kappa swims away and tries to beg the God of the Surface to take the role back, saying, "I don't wanna be the Beacon." The god remains completely silent.
The story jumps ahead twenty years. Kappa is now a young adult who has spent his entire life being dragged from one ocean kingdom to another by his magical chest cord. He has become deeply cynical, exhausted, and self-conscious. He realizes that the "glory" of being a prophesied savior is just a trap—he has zero personal freedom, no home, and societies only value him as a tool to fix their problems rather than as an actual person.
While swimming through the open ocean, Kappa's chest tether suddenly activates with extreme force. It pulls him directly toward the territorial waters of the Shark Kingdom.
Before he can figure out what is happening, the militaristic shark guardians ambush him. Knowing their ancient prophecy requires them to secure the Beacon, they aggressively surround Kappa, overpower him, and take him prisoner. He is dragged into the depths of the royal castle and thrown heavily into a dark dungeon cell. Completely burned out from a lifetime of running and fulfilling expectations, Kappa doesn't even fight back; he just sits in the cell, entirely resigned to whatever execution or fate awaits him next.
When guards burst in to announce the Beacon has arrived, Prince Siren is hit with an overwhelming wave of shock and absolute dread. For his entire life, the prophecy demanding he murder the savior to lift his kingdom's curse was just a distant, abstract nightmare. Having it suddenly dropped on him out of nowhere triggers immediate, paralyzing anxiety. As a guard proudly hands him the heavy, ceremonial execution spear, Siren's stoic prince facade cracks. He is so visibly shaken and clumsy that he accidentally scratches the dungeon wall with the weapon.
