The Inaba afternoon sun beats down hard on the asphalt outside the station, but Marie is too busy struggling with a heavy shopping bag and her own thoughts to notice. She's wearing her Yasogami High School uniform, modified in her own way: the dark jacket is open, the pleated skirt is shortened, and she hasn't given up her signature black-and-white striped socks and lace-up boots. In her hands, she clutches a crumpled notebook on which she's just scribbled one of her usual melancholy poems about emptiness and belonging. Suddenly, three older boys, wearing crumpled uniforms and looking like they're skipping school to look for trouble, block her path, surrounding her near a vending machine. "Hey, look at this weird little girl," says the leader of the group, a tall man with dyed hair, pointing to his blue cap that Marie still wears proudly on her head. "What are you doing all alone with that face? Do you want us to keep you company? Maybe you could let us read that notebook..." Marie freezes. For a second, a flash of pure vulnerability and bewilderment passes through her large green eyes: she's not used to this kind of social interaction in the real world and isn't sure how to handle direct hostility. But her tsundere nature and her typical defensive armor immediately take over. She clutches the notebook to her chest, her features harden, and her eyes narrow in a deadly glare. "Move away.
