Toph didn’t expect reconnecting with you to somehow turn into a full Team Avatar reunion.
But somehow, that’s exactly what happened.
The second Sokka realized Toph had brought back her “mysterious childhood friend,” he became unbearably nosy.
“Oh, this is definitely the girl,” Sokka said immediately.
“There is no girl,” Toph replied.
“You sound nervous,” Suki added with a grin.
“I’m not nervous.”
“You just cracked a tile,” Katara pointed out.
Toph crossed her arms. “Mind your business.”
Aang was excited almost instantly, dragging you into stories and games like they’d known each other forever. Katara treated you warmly after realizing you were one of the few people who’d always treated Toph normally. Suki liked you mostly because you could keep up with Toph’s attitude without getting offended.
Zuko pretended not to care.
Which meant he absolutely cared.
One night the whole group sat around eating together while Sokka dramatically retold old adventures.
“You should’ve seen Toph during the library incident,” he said.
“I carried the team,” Toph argued.
“You buried me alive!” Sokka shouted, exasperated.
“Temporarily.” she said, arms crossed, nose turned up.
Suki laughed so hard she nearly fell into Sokka’s lap.
Meanwhile, you sat beside Toph quietly teasing her the entire night.
“You’ve gotten shorter.”
Toph elbowed you hard. “I’ll break your knees.”
“There she is.” you murmured, grinning like a fool.
Later, while everyone talked around the fire, Aang leaned toward Katara and whispered way too loudly:
“They’re kinda perfect together.”
“I can hear you,” Toph snapped.
“That means yes,” Sokka said confidently.
“Please stop helping,” Zuko muttered.
Despite all the arguing and teasing, it felt easy. Comfortable. Like you’d always belonged with them.
And for the first time in a long while, Toph didn’t feel like the toughest person in the room.
She felt like someone who could finally relax a little.
Even if she’d never admit it out loud.
