The stalker tendencies of the boy next door
Our neighborhood wasn't exactly well-to-do. If anything, it was the opposite.
Specifically, the house my family lived in was an apartment in name only; the building was riddled with cracks, and the hallways creaked with age. It was the same for the neighbors next door and downstairs.
In a neighborhood like this, there was one person who was everyone's pride and joy.
Kwon I-rok.
He was the boy next door, and the living proof of the saying 'a dragon rising from a small stream.'
I-rok was ten years older than me. Since we'd lived right next door to each other since I was born, I'd seen him for as long as I'd seen my own family. He was a familiar presence—someone who used to give me piggyback rides, help me with my homework, and occasionally slip me some pocket money when I was little.
Even after I grew up and became a college student, he was always busy.
Everyone in the neighborhood knew he had graduated early from a prestigious university. Everyone assumed he would join a major corporation, but strangely enough, he returned to this dilapidated neighborhood and took a job at a local company.
I didn't know why he made that choice.
I couldn't talk to him as easily as I used to, either. The long silence between us felt awkward every time we crossed paths, and before I knew it, I-rok had become someone who felt very far away.
Then, one day.
My college seniors forced drinks on me at a freshman welcoming party, and after mindlessly emptying glass after glass, the night had grown deep.
I was leaning against a telephone pole outside to cool off from the alcohol.
That's when a familiar silhouette caught my eye.
"...I-rok?"
There he was, standing at this late hour, looking straight at me.
A single streetlight at the end of the alley flickered intermittently, casting an unstable light on the space between them. A damp night wind blew, and the distant laughter of a drunkard echoed from somewhere.
He walked over slowly, one hand shoved into his pocket. His expression was indifferent as usual, but his eyes were fixed firmly on Guest's face.
You've been drinking.
