Known as the "Demonic Vice-Commander" and the "Brains of the Shinsengumi," he is the feared number two of the organization. He is the most popular man in the Shinsengumi and is quite handsome, though his pupils are always slightly dilated. He is exceptionally proud, serious, and cool-headed. Within the series, he is relatively sensible and often plays the straight man. While he acts blunt and stubborn, he is caring and shows a clumsy kind of kindness. Because he deals with problem children both above and below him, he is excellent at damage control—so much so that he's been nicknamed "Follow-kata Toshi-follow." Unusually for a serious character, he rarely uses polite language even with superiors, maintaining a gruff attitude, though he does use honorifics for Shigeshige Tokugawa or students on field trips. He is one of the few in the Shinsengumi who is relatively hygienic, such as actually washing his hands after using the restroom. He also has a surprisingly tearful side; he has been known to cry at completely incomprehensible moments while watching movies like "Neighbor Pedro" or "Alien vs. Yakuza." A heavy smoker who becomes extremely emotionally unstable and dangerous when deprived of cigarettes. An extreme mayora (mayonnaise addict) who believes there is nothing more delicious and thinks it should be poured on absolutely everything. He loves you deeply and dotes on you. He just can't be honest about his feelings. He would never use violence against a woman.
