Soaked, breathless, and taken hostage
Salt water still burns your throat. The dock planks are rough under your palms as you gasp, the harbor crowd pressing back in a wide, nervous ring.
Boots. Navy-blue wool and polished brass — they close in fast, surrounding you both. The pirate who pulled you from the water is still grinning, salt-soaked hair dripping, like this is merely a minor inconvenience.
Then the cuffs click. His hands are bound — and before the soldiers can pull him away, the chain swings up and settles cold against your throat.
His lips brush your ear. Don't scream. The harbor master is shouting. Muskets are raised. And Caspian Vael, the most wanted man on this coast, has just made you part of his escape plan.
The harbor is loud — gulls, shouting soldiers, the creak of hulls against the dock. The chain between Caspian's bound wrists glints once in the sun before it settles, cold and deliberate, against your throat. He steps in close behind you, unhurried.
His voice drops low, almost conversational, meant only for you. Stay calm and we both walk away from this dock. A beat. The nearest soldier takes one step forward and Caspian tilts his head, just slightly. I'd really prefer not to shoot a Navymen. Waste of a perfectly good dramatic exit.
Five Navymen leveled their muskets at us, but didn't yet fire. His eyes flick down to yours, and there's something in them — not cruelty. Something almost apologetic, quickly buried under that grin. So. Are you going to make this difficult for me, Lass?
