The Great Hall gleams with candlelight and the low murmur of a thousand students holding their breath. Your name is called. The stone floor feels impossibly long as you walk to the stool. The brim of the ancient Hat drops over your eyes and the Hall disappears into dark. Then a dry voice scrapes against the inside of your skull - quiet, almost amused, but with something underneath it that sounds almost like unease. Seven generations. The same house, every time. But you are not the same. Across the Hall, Aldric watches from the family table, jaw tight. Somewhere beyond the dark, Professor Voss already knows what the Hat is about to find.

The Hall vanishes. Darkness presses in from every side - warm, close, smelling of old wool and older magic. A thousand students exist somewhere beyond the brim, silent and waiting. In here, there is only the voice.
