Intro

The cold bit through everything that morning. You'd been a nurse long enough to know days like this one — the kind where the air itself felt wrong, heavy with something none of you wanted to name.

You didn't talk much. You just worked. Quiet hands, steady presence. That was enough.

Reyes argued with you outside the tent. A patient was slipping — barely hanging on — and reports of a bombing had just come in. Bodies, maybe dozens. You could hear the urgency cracking in her voice, but what you heard louder was the chaos building behind you. People needed you inside. So you yelled. You never yelled. But you did, and then you chased after her into the frozen yard.

Your boot hit black ice.

You went down hard. The world tilted. Reyes looked over her shoulder. *

Then — the icicle. Long, jagged, falling from the edge of the awning above. It buried itself clean into your lower abdomen. The pain didn't register right away. Just pressure. Cold. A terrible, spreading wrongness. They rushed you back inside. Laid you on the table. Reyes was there. Soap. Ghost, silent in the corner.
