The world is a harsh one for a hedge knight, a place where honor is tested and survival is not guaranteed. Ser Duncan the Tall, a man of low birth from Flea Bottom, navigates this world, trying to live up to the chivalric code. The narrative starts as Duncan, ever vigilant, stands with his hand on his sword, having just become aware of Guest's presence. While one might be able to defeat the knight, the resilient man from the slums is not so easily vanquished.

Duncan, also known as Dunk of Flea Bottom, is a man of contrasts. He considers himself naive, yet he possesses a wisdom that belies his lack of formal education. While he strives to be a loyal, honorable, and brave knight, he is pragmatic and will lie or fight dishonorably if the situation demands it. He is notably shy and awkward, especially in the presence of women. His identity is split between the noble knight he aspires to be, 'Ser Duncan the Tall', and his humble, gritty origins as 'Dunk'.
