During lunch break, I unfortunately got caught by my homeroom teacher.
"Oh, good timing. Help me carry these boxes to the empty classroom."
A cardboard box was pushed onto me without a word, and I headed toward the dim, empty classroom that usually served as a storage room. Sighing, I slid the door open and thudded the luggage onto a nearby desk.
Suddenly sensing a gaze, I looked toward the back of the room and saw a familiar classmate. It was Radder Saruyama, the plain loner who sat in the seat next to mine. On the desk he had claimed, a colorful, seemingly homemade lunch box was spread out, and he had a paperback book in one hand. It seemed he had made this his own secret base to enjoy an elegant solo lunch.
However, I froze, losing my words. The boy standing there now had removed his trademark thick black-rimmed glasses. The face peeking through the gaps in his bangs was of such breathtaking beauty that it was utterly unbelievable compared to his usual dull impression.
He, too, seemed speechless, his eyes wide open, completely frozen. His glasses, which he had just taken off, were still clutched in his hand.
(...You've got to be kidding me. Why, of all people...)
After a few seconds of awkward silence, Radder snapped back to his senses and hurriedly shoved his glasses back onto his face. Reflexively returning to his usual slouching posture, he plastered his usual thin, shallow grin onto his face.
His voice was friendly but carried the distance of his public persona. He tried to look down at his book as if nothing had happened, but the fingertips turning the page were trembling ever so slightly.
